How often should stain protection be applied?
Some carpet cleaners say after every cleaning but I think they are just after your money. The frequency depends on the type of carpet or upholstery fibers you have and how much wear and tear there is on the fibers. Nylon is the most popular and durable carpet fiber but also tends to accept stains more easily than olefin and polyester meaning that for areas with a lot of wear and tear I would suggest treatment each time carpets are cleaned. Maybe the entry area, hall, dining room area or other high traffic areas in your home. Every other cleaning I would apply to all of carpets. Polyester is more stain resistant but the same frequency suggestions apply to polyester fibers.

How fiber protection works-
Everything has what is called a dyne rating. In very simple terms, dynes rate the amount of surface tension in materials. See this photo of the water droplets? It is the surface tension of the water that makes it bead up. The lower the dynes rating then the wetter the water becomes and it would not bead up at all. We can't control the dyne rating of the coffee or the wine that gets spilled on the carpet or upholstery but we can control the dyne rating of the carpet and upholstery fibers. By applying a fluorochmical solution to the fibers we affectivly lower the dyne rating of the fibers to a lower rating than the substances being spilled. Thus the coffee or wine beads up instead of soaking down into your carpets.

The fluorochemical solutions we use are not sticky nor do they attract dirt instead it is just the opposite, they repeal dirt and don't allow it to become enmeshed into the fibers.

The cost-

$15 for hallways
$25 for a couch
$15 for recliners
$5 to $10 for smaller chairs
Olefin is a popular fiber and is much more stain resistant than nylon. Unless you have a lot of oil coming onto your carpets then you need apply protectant to olefin carpets less frequently.
Be aware however that high alkaline cleaning products with a PH level higher than 10 will strip the fiber protector from your carpets. Educated carpet cleaners never use a PH 10 level cleaner unless absolutely necessary. If they do then they will suggest that stain guard protecter be applied.

Common questions about fiber protection
Does having carpet stain guard protection mean I don't have to worry about spills. Answer- It means that when spills happen they will not soak into the fibers as for a while. If you leave them there and they get walked on then they may penetrate the fibers. It is a resistor not a barrier.

How fast does it wear off? Answer- It is all about wear and tear. Traffic areas wear fastest. If you have moderate traffic then you should be able to go a year between treatments. The better job you vacuum the longer the protection lasts. It is small grains of sand and dirt that act like sandpaper and wear it away.
